Harrogate District of Sanctuary was formed at the start of 2017, in response the to Syrian crisis and arrival of refugees to our district. We offer a much loved and valued service for the refugee families and asylum seekers who have come to join our community. We provide practical support and also arrange social gatherings and outings so that these families feel welcome and included. We support them in learning our language so that they can be integrated quickly, gaining voluntary positions and eventually employment so that they can become fully integrated and independent.
In June we had a respite weekend at the Jonas Centre in Redmire, Wensleydale where 9 of the families enjoyed a much needed break and change of scene. The break included a train ride to Leyburn, lots of outdoor games, including of course, football, and on the Saturday we had a wonderful Syrian BBQ with lots of invited guests so the total was around 80 people!
We are all volunteers who gladly give our time and energy to achieve our goals, but we would like to offer more help and support, for example by:
