About our cause
St John’s, Sharow is an important community hub, heritage attraction, performance venue and oasis for wildlife.
The “Friends of St John’s, Sharow” exist to maximise public engagement with the newly refurbished building, winner of the 2018 Ripon Civic Society’s Helen Whitehead award for ”best development project”
The churchyard which is afforded North Yorkshire wildlife status is recognised as one of the pre-eminent ecologically diverse sites in the country.
Community space offers an all age 200-seat main area with low level stage, a 15 seat smaller meeting room, grand piano, audio and projection, under-floor heating, 3 toilets, kitchen and ample car parking. These facilities add up to a very versatile venue which with your help and interest we can develop and use together. Current community users of the facilities include: regular weekly rehearsal space for 2 choirs (incl. Ripon Choral Society with 150 members), 125 painting art exhibition, concert facilities for other local choirs, music ensembles, Ripon Young Musician of the Year Finals and G & S Society performances. The acoustics of the building have proven to be excellent for recording purposes.
We need your help to maintain and enhance this valuable community provision. We want to deliver more community engagement projects like the recently acclaimed “silhouette soldiers” raising awareness of the impact of the first World War on the village and Ripon area. In particular we aim to raise the community spirit of the local parish villages by creating a location that brings all the community together and enables a wide range of community events such as better use of the small meeting room for art, bridge, photography and craft classes or just a quiet reading/meeting room – the larger space for drama & dance, for lecture presentations or AGM meetings for any local organisations or company requiring a 150/200-seat capacity assembly room. This larger space has the potential to be an excellent dinning facility or recording studio.
Yours sincerely,
David Page
