Open Country is a Harrogate-based charity which has been in operation since 1990. We seek to enable anyone with any disability, including people with physical and learning disabilities, sensory impairments and mental health issues, to access the countryside. We also provide information, advice and training. Last year we worked with around 375 people on 6,442 people visits to the countryside. Our work is recognised by the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for Voluntary Service and the Duke of York’s Community Initiative.
We operate largely through a number of clubs, ranging from nature conservation work parties, tandem riding activities for visually impaired people, walking groups and trips specifically for wheelchair users. These activities help break down the barriers to socially excluded and disadvantaged people in society.
Our 3 minibuses are essential to the charity, as without them we wouldn't be able to get disabled people out into the countryside. We try to purchase a new bus every 5-7 years to ensure that they are as safe and reliable as possible. Any support which we receive from The Local Lotto will go towards purchasing our next minibus, and helping to continue providing our valuable service to disabled people across the district.
Thank you for your continued support and good luck!
