Renaissance Knaresborough was set up here in 2005 to identify, develop and deliver projects to improve the town and the surrounding area. It was originally set up as part of the Renaissance Market Town initiative sponsored by Yorkshire Forward to support market towns in the region. That initiative has long ended but Renaissance Knaresborough remains as a not for profit organisation run by a team of volunteers.
We have instigated and supported numerous town improvements over the years, including the introduction of a viaduct terrace, improvements to Bebra Gardens and Frazer Theatre, Horseshoe Field Bridge restoration as well as organising festivals and events. Perhaps the most striking venture has been the 'Trompe L'Oeil' Town Windows project - paintings by local artists depicting aspects of the town's history appearing to be behind glass and locating them in the blind windows in some of the town's Georgian buildings. A guide to the windows (produced by us) is available in Knaresborough's Tourist Information Centre.
We have two major projects in the pipeline; the establishment of a Cliff Lift connecting Waterside and the Castle and the creation of a new Town Museum. We are also actively fundraising to maintain our Town Windows and to replace one which is damaged beyond repair.
We are strongly committed to the development and delivery of local causes but as we work entirely on voluntary donations, we need your help so we can continue our work.
Thank you for your support and good luck!
