Founded in 2005 Yorkshire Yoga is a small, well established health and wellbeing charity based in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. We provide a variety of high-quality exercise, therapy and well-being activities from our fully accessible studio and across our community via outreach projects. We believe the benefits of Yoga and Mindfulness should be available to all; irrespective of abilities, situation or finances when people need help the most. We tailor our classes to specific user groups encouraging everyone in the community to become involved; especially those who would normally consider Yoga and Mindfulness as a route to physical / mental health and wellbeing.
Our service offer includes specialist support such as Pregnancy, Postnatal and Mother and Baby Yoga, Chair Based Yoga / Stretch and Dance and Seated Yoga Flex and Core (Disability and 60+), Gentle Years Yoga (60+), Able and Enabled Yoga (Wheelchair Users) as well as a plethora of other classes such as Pilates, Fitness Dance, Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, Childrens Yoga, Mindful Yoga and Restorative Yoga to name but a few.
By tailoring our support for groups like these and making it available to all segments of our community we seek to empower people to look after their own physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. It is our mission to work with partners to address health inequalities and improve everyday lives of our patrons by providing the opportunity to build friendships, support networks and a community with like-minded people.
Yorkshire Yoga has over 400 active and loyal users; 43% of our users have been attending activities for more than a year, 40% of whom have been attending our activities for more than 5 years. 88% of our users are women and most are older. 24% are aged over 60 years and 36% aged between 45 and 60 years. 62% have some form of disability and/or illness that limits their life, 10% significantly. Only 24% work full time and 31% part time. 37% describe themselves as retired. 74% describe their income as good or average. Nearly a quarter of our regular students are aged between 60-93. Many people attending our weekly Yoga class claim this is the only regular activity outside of the home and the only contact they have with the outside world.
Usually we would use income generated by ‘paid-for’ classes to fund our charitable work. However, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic our centre has been in lockdown since 18th March in line with Government guidance. As we currently have no income being generated we now have limited available funds to continue supporting our most vulnerable clients until we can secure specifically targeted funding, hence why we desperately need your support!
Please give what you can to help us to continue to support those who need access to community health related provision in your community and help us help them lead healthier and happier lives!
Thank you in advance for all your support,
The Yorkshire Yoga Team!
