Samaritans of Harrogate and District: providing vital support, one call at a time

13 October 2023

Samaritans of Harrogate and District is a remarkable organisation that provides crucial crisis support to individuals who find themselves in distress and despair, including those contemplating suicide. They offer a safe and confidential space for open conversations, free from judgment or bias.

With an amazing team of 130 volunteers who listen to callers around the clock, they handle 22,018 calls and respond to 2,295 emails on average each year.

Why they need your support

The Samaritans of Harrogate and District receive no external funding to run their Harrogate branch. They raise the necessary £40,000 annually to cover their running costs from grants, donations, events and bids. They also rely on THE LOCAL LOTTO, our online community lottery platform, which has already raised over £272,920 for local causes in the Harrogate area.

How you can help

Here's where you come in! By participating in THE LOCAL LOTTO, you can directly contribute to this cause - 60p from every £1 ticket goes straight to the local cause you are choosing to support when buying your ticket.

The Samaritans have raised £300 so far through the community lottery, offering supporters a chance to win while giving back—it's a win-win for everyone involved!

Where the funds go

100% of the funds raised from their collaboration with THE LOCAL LOTTO go towards the running of their branch in Harrogate, covering expenses for the building, utilities, IT, and more. Your generosity empowers the Samaritans to continue offering vital services such as local outreach work, including their Rural Initiative which helps to get the message out to isolated communities that it’s OK to talk.

Making a difference, together

Samaritans of Harrogate and District's partnership with THE LOCAL LOTTO has allowed them to engage with the local community in powerful ways.

Last December, they joined the Harrogate Christmas Hut event, which allowed many of their volunteers to contribute to fundraising as they engaged in creative activities and felt included in the fundraising efforts.

It was a fantastic opportunity for the Samaritans to engage with local market-goers, explaining their mission and how they could support the organisation. The funds raised allowed them to cover the costs of many calls received during the holiday season, as they are open 24/7, 365 days a year. Each call costs £5, and their partnership with THE LOCAL LOTTO helped them be there for those in need during Christmas.

Here's how you can get involved

Samaritans of Harrogate and District rely on the kindness and generosity of the community to keep their vital work going. Here is how you can support them:
